CASE: ATEX DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM FOR GLASS FIBER

ATEX extraction system fiber materialWe recently installed this ATEX dust extraction system for glass fiber dust at one of VELUX’s production sites in Denmark. In regards to the explosion hazard (ATEX), the explosion characteristics of the dust were unknown. Therefore, the dust was tested before designing the extraction system.

The test showed a Kst of 60 m*bar/sec, Pmax of 6 bar and a Lower Explosion Limit of 750 g/m3.

Based on that, a dust collector with an Ex type-approved casing and the correct number of explosion relief was chosen. This together with an Ex type-approved rotary valve ensures the appropriate safety level. The two fans are designed for Ex category 3 (zone 22) inside due to the actual dust amount through the system being far lower than the Lower Explosion Limit.

Despite a small amount of dust/waste material, the MHL EXP with automatic regeneration was chosen due to the high reliability, Ex approval and easy future expansion due to the modular design.

In the near future, a heat recovery unit will be installed for reuse of the heat from the extracted air to lower energy consumption.
