CASE: MANUAL PAINTING LINE FOR 38 M LONG WIND TURBINE TOWERS

New wet painting line with sand blasting booth, two new paint booths and metalization booths

Painting line - wet paintMoldow has delivered a painting line for Titan Wind Energy in Esbjerg, Denmark – a company that produces approx. 350 towers a year. With an item length of up to 38 m and 5,5 in diameter, this project required a special plant solution.

The delivery included a rebuilding of Titan’s production hall so that the space is used to the fullest extent and every step in the painting process is completed in the same building. Moldow has supplied a new sand blasting booth, two new painting booths and changed the existing painting booths to metalization booths. Futhermore, the whole ventilation system, filters for sand blasting and metalization and equipment for sand blasting were also part of the delivery.

Excellent collaboration

“This project has been challenging because Titan had to continue their production while we built the plant. So that required coordination and great collaboration between us and them. We managed to complete this without any problems, so we are very proud of this”, says Project Manager, Peter Skjøth.

Moldow has undertaken everything from the preliminary work and design to the project planning, production and installation. Due to the complexity of the project, many sub-suppliers were involved, and they have all been very flexible and cooperative.

“We have been very satisfied with how Moldow has handled this project. We were very dependent on being able to continue our production, which imposes high demands on everybody involved in the project. But the coorporation between us, Moldow and their sub-suppliers has been excellent”, explains Michael Buus Nielsen, Managing Director of Titan Wind Energy (Europe).

Painting Large Metal Items

To ensure high quality of the succeeding coating, the towers are first sand blasted to prepare them. When sand blasting, the surface is cleaned, and the right roughness is obtained. The 48 m long sand blasting room is ventilated with 60,000 m³/h. In a technical room, the fans, filter and sandblasting equipment also delivered by Moldow is placed.

After the sandblasting, the towers are metalized which is necessary when painting offshore turbines that have to be resistant to salt water corrosion. Titan is able to work in one of the metalization booths at a time, and these are also ventilated with 60,000 m³/h.

Due to the dimensions of the towers, the painting booths are two large halls, where the towers are manually painting with wet paint. The halls are ventilated with 60,000 m³/h to ensure extraction and filtration of the painting through panels along the sides and injection in the ceiling. Both halls can be used at the same time, and they are equipped with two gates and a pump room.

“This project shows that Moldow is cabable of supplying plants for painting of alle types of items. The towers that go through this plant are 38 m long while we have supplied plants for painting of very small items such as spectacle frame and mobile covers in the past. Our plants are customized so they meet the customer’s specific requirements, and we manage the whole project from the beginning to the end”, explains Project Manager, Peter Skjøth.
