EFFICIENT, SAFE DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM FOR PLYWOOD

ATEX MHL EXP filterThese two Moldow dust extraction systems ensure efficient waste material extraction and air filtration at South American plywood manufacturer Uruply SA’s (Lumin) production site in Uruguay.

Focus has been on explosion safe systems that meets the local and ATEX requirements as well as highly efficient systems which is ensured by the design of the baghouse filters with chain conveyor for internal material transport to the rotary valve, continuous reverse air cleaning of the filter bags and efficient fans.

The two extraction systems, which have been sold and installed in cooperation with Moldow’s long-term South American partner PRO AMBIENT S.A., included two Moldow MHL EXP baghouse filters, two EX rotary valves and two extraction fans for extraction of a total of 103,000 m3/h (60,600 CFM). The larger system is for extraction of plywood sanding dust, and the other one is for chips from a chipper.

From both systems, pneumatic transport systems including transport fans for a total of 12,000 m3/h transport the waste material to an adjacent plant.

Explosion Safe Dust Extraction System according to ATEX Directive

As the extracted waste is fine plywood dust and chips, there’s a risk of an explosive atmosphere. Therefore, the systems are designed to comply with the requirements of the ATEX directive (explosive atmospheres).

The two baghouse filters are designed to provide maximum safety and protection against a dust explosion. The main extraction fans are placed behind the filter (negative pressure) to avoid them being an ignition source, and the filters are fully tested and ATEX certified by a notified body which means that they contain no internal ignition sources.

However, due to the small risk of an external ignition source, the baghouse filters are equipped with explosion relief panels and EX rotary valves type approved as a safety component, and furthermore, four non-return valves have been installed with two in the extraction system and two in the pneumatic transport system to prevent the spread of a possible explosion.

Together, the correctly designed and dimensioned EX panels, rotary valves and non-return valves will ensure that a possible (however unlikely) explosion is relieved in a safe way without risking an uncontrolled explosion of the filter and damages to the buildings and pneumatic material transport systems.

For further protection, a spark detection and extinguishing system has been installed in both the extraction and pneumatic transport system, and to comply with local fire regulations, the filters are equipped with deluge valve extinguishing systems.
